The Grand Egyptian Museum Opens a New Chapter for Egypt’s Ancient Treasures

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has emerged as one of Egypt’s most significant cultural and tourism destinations, offering visitors an extraordinary journey through thousands of years of ancient Egyptian civilization. Located near the Giza pyramids, the museum officially opened its doors on November 1, 2025, establishing itself as the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization.  

Designed as a bridge between Egypt’s ancient past and its modern future, GEM combines monumental architecture, advanced technology and an extensive collection of archaeological treasures. The museum complex covers approximately 500,000 square meters, with the main museum occupying about 92,000 square meters.  

One of the most impressive visitor experiences begins in the Grand Hall, where the enormous statue of King Ramesses II welcomes visitors. The Grand Staircase then takes guests past 59 monumental artifacts, including royal statues, columns, stelae and sarcophagi.  

The museum’s collections span from prehistoric Egypt through the Greek and Roman periods. Its main galleries are organized around three themes—Society, Kingship and Beliefs—allowing visitors to understand not only the spectacular objects of ancient Egypt but also the people, political systems and religious traditions behind them.  

Among GEM’s greatest attractions is its extensive presentation of the treasures of King Tutankhamun. Objects associated with the famous boy king are being brought together in a dedicated gallery experience, offering visitors an opportunity to see artifacts from his tomb within a dramatically expanded setting.

Another extraordinary feature is the Khufu Boats Museum, where two ancient boats associated with King Khufu are being preserved and displayed. The first boat was transported approximately eight kilometers from the Giza Plateau to GEM in 2021. The second boat has also been excavated, conserved and transported to the museum, where visitors can observe aspects of its conservation and reconstruction.  

GEM also goes beyond traditional museum exhibits. Visitors can experience children’s educational programs, gardens, restaurants, shops and mixed-reality experiences designed to connect modern audiences with ancient history.  

For travelers visiting Cairo and Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum is more than another stop on an itinerary.
