On our exciting 2025 Cultural Tour of South Africa we'll visit Pretoria, one of South Africa’s capital cities, a place where history, culture, and vibrant natural beauty intertwine. Known for its jacaranda-lined streets that bloom into a sea of purple each spring, the city holds a significant place in the nation’s past and its ongoing journey toward unity and reconciliation.
One of Pretoria’s most iconic landmarks is the towering statue of Nelson Mandela, located at the Union Buildings, which serve as the seat of the South African government. This bronze monument, standing 9 meters tall, is the largest statue of Mandela in the world. It was unveiled in 2013, just days after his passing, as a tribute to the man whose life and legacy symbolized South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy. Mandela is depicted with his arms outstretched, symbolizing unity and a warm embrace for the nation he helped transform.
The Union Buildings themselves are a marvel of architecture, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, and sit atop Meintjieskop Hill, offering panoramic views of Pretoria. Surrounding the Mandela statue, lush gardens and wide-open spaces invite reflection on the progress South Africa has made and the challenges that remain.
Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” This sentiment resonates deeply in Pretoria, a city that has witnessed both the pain of division and the triumph of reconciliation.
Visitors to Pretoria can explore more than just its historical landmarks. The city is home to museums, art galleries, and vibrant markets that showcase South Africa’s diverse culture. Combined with its rich history and symbolic importance, Pretoria is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to understand the heart and soul of South Africa.
