Rwanda, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is a small, landlocked country in East Africa known for its breathtaking landscapes and remarkable recovery from a tragic past. Its history is deeply marked by the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, in which over 800,000 people were killed in just 100 days. Since then, Rwanda has undergone a profound transformation, emerging as one of Africa’s safest, cleanest, and most progressive nations.
Kigali, the capital city, is modern and efficient, with impressive infrastructure and a growing economy. The country has focused heavily on reconciliation, education, and development, making it a symbol of resilience. One of Rwanda’s most famous attractions is Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas studied by Dian Fossey. Gorilla trekking here draws visitors from around the world. Akagera National Park and Nyungwe Forest also offer rich biodiversity and unique wildlife experiences.
Rwandans lead a lifestyle that blends traditional customs with modern influences. The society places a strong emphasis on community and cleanliness—plastic bags are banned, and the last Saturday of each month is dedicated to Umuganda, a national day of community service.
Christianity is the dominant religion, practiced by more than 90 percent of the population, with Catholicism and Protestantism being most prevalent. Islam and indigenous beliefs are also practiced by smaller groups.
Rwanda’s climate is temperate, thanks to its high elevation. The weather is generally pleasant year-round, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons.
Interesting facts include Rwanda being one of the few countries in the world with a majority female parliament. It is also known for its strong environmental policies, including a ban on plastic bags and efforts toward reforestation. With its tragic history, inspiring recovery, and natural beauty, Rwanda stands as a testament to human resilience and the power of unity.
