Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, located in downtown Accra, Ghana, is a significant historical and cultural site dedicated to Ghana’s first President and prominent African leader, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Our African Travel Seminars group tours include the magnificent Accra, Ghana’s capital city. This bustling metropolis is home to over 2.5 million people and serves as a hub for the country’s vibrant tourism sector, drawing visitors to its historical landmarks, bustling markets, and coastline.
With a population of approximately 32 million, Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule in 1957, becoming the first Sub-Saharan African country to achieve this milestone. Accra, with its growing tourism industry, is key to Ghana’s reputation as a gateway to African history and culture.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park includes a mausoleum, the final resting place of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah. The mausoleum was designed by Don Arthur and represents an upside-down sword, a symbol of peace in Akan culture. This architectural piece is clad in Italian marble, with a black star at its peak, symbolizing unity. Inside, visitors will find marble flooring and a unique grave marker surrounded by river-washed rocks, enhancing the memorial’s serene atmosphere.
The park also includes a museum that houses rare artifacts related to Ghana’s independence and provides in-depth historical insights into the struggle for independence in Sub-Saharan Africa. Guided tours of the park offer visitors a comprehensive understanding of this era and Ghana’s journey to freedom.
From 2020 to 2023, the park underwent significant redevelopment to enhance its appeal and better honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy. The upgrades included an expanded museum and a refurbished mausoleum. Additional features now include a Presidential Library, a mini amphitheater, a restaurant, and a new reception area. A new audio-visual fountain and a gift shop were also added, making the park a more engaging and educational site for tourists. This redevelopment has transformed the park into a modern, interactive space that both educates and celebrates Ghana’s rich history and its first President’s contribution to Pan-Africanism.
