Kakum National Park, located in the Central Region of Ghana, is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its rich biodiversity and lush tropical rainforest. ATS tour of Ghana explores this park which was established in 1992.
The park spans approximately 375 square kilometers and is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including over 300 species of birds, 600 species of butterflies, and several endangered animals like the forest elephant, bongo antelope, and the Diana monkey.
On our tour, you'll discover one of the park’s most unique features is its famous canopy walkway, a series of suspension bridges connected by tree platforms that stand 30 meters (about 98 feet) above the forest floor. This canopy walkway, the first of its kind in Africa, offers visitors a thrilling view of the rainforest and the chance to observe animals and birds in their natural habitat from above. For many, the experience of walking among the treetops is a highlight of their visit to Kakum National Park.
Kakum is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The local communities around the park, primarily from the Akan ethnic group, have long had a relationship with the forest and its resources. Today, they are involved in the park’s eco-tourism efforts, helping to preserve the forest while also benefiting economically from the influx of tourists.
The park also offers guided nature walks led by knowledgeable guides who educate visitors about the medicinal plants, unique ecosystems, and conservation efforts in place to protect Kakum’s biodiversity. Additionally, there are educational centers within the park that provide more insights into the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
Kakum National Park is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism, offering visitors an unforgettable experience while promoting the preservation of its precious natural resources for future generations.
