Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, is known for its stunning landscapes, thriving wildlife, and deep cultural heritage. With a population of around 2.6 million, Botswana is one of Africa’s most stable nations, celebrated for its strong democracy and commitment to conservation. And, when it comes to diamond production, Botswana, is the biggest producer of diamonds by value.
Diamonds account for around 80% of Botswana’s exports and a quarter of its GDP, according to the International Monetary Fund. Most recently, Botswana has unearthed all of the world’s largest rough diamonds over the last decade, including a 2,492-carat stone discovered last year that was the second-biggest diamond ever dug out of a mine and the biggest in more than a century. That gem was found by Canadian mining firm Lucara.
Botswana’s history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of early human habitation by the San (Bushmen) people. The modern nation was once a British protectorate known as Bechuanaland until gaining independence in 1966. Since then, it has flourished, largely due to its well-managed diamond industry and tourism sector.
Tourism is a key part of Botswana’s economy, attracting visitors with its breathtaking natural wonders.
The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a vast inland river delta teeming with wildlife, offering unmatched safari experiences. Chobe National Park boasts one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, while the Kalahari Desert is home to unique species and the indigenous San people.
Botswana’s cultural richness is reflected in its heritage sites, such as Tsodilo Hills, often called the “Louvre of the Desert” for its ancient rock paintings. Visitors can experience traditional music, dance, and crafts in villages like Maun and Serowe, where local customs and storytelling remain vibrant.
